Today, the Subcommittee on Federal Lands held a legislative hearing on nine bills to recognize important sites in American history, improve the management of our public lands and address challenges facing federal land managers. Subcommittee Chairman Tom Tiffany (R-Wis.) issued the following statement in response:

“This week, the Subcommittee on Federal Lands considered legislation that addressed the various ways that we in Congress can properly recognize our nation’s history. Importantly, I would like to highlight a bill introduced by my friend, Congressman Scott Fitzgerald, to rightfully honor the Wisconsin soldiers who bravely fought in the Battle of Antietam and the Second Battle of Bull Run.”

H.R. 1031, the Fort Ontario Holocaust Refugee Shelter National Historical Park Establishment Act, introduced by U.S. Rep. Claudia Tenney (R-N.Y.), creates the Fort Ontario National Monument in N.Y., where 982 World War II refugees were housed from August of 1944 until February of 1946.

H.R. 2323, the Big Bend National Park Boundary Adjustment Act, introduced by U.S. Rep. August Pfluger (R-Texas), authorizes the acquisition of approximately 6,100 acres of land to be added to Big Bend National Park.

H.R. 7495, introduced by U.S. Rep. Scott Fitzgerald (R-Wis.), authorizes the establishment of memorials to the Wisconsin infantry officers and enlisted men who fought in the Battle of Antietam and the Second Battle of Bull Run in the U.S. Civil War.

H.R. 8276, the Quindaro Townsite National Historic Landmark Act, introduced by U.S. Rep. Derek Schmidt (R-Kan.), designates the Quindaro Townsite in Kansas City, Kan., as a National Historic Landmark.

H.R. 9148, the Scipio Jones House Assessment Act, introduced by U.S. Rep. French Hill (R-Ark.), directs the Secretary of the Interior to conduct a special resource study of the Scipio A. Jones House in Little Rock, Ark.

H.R. 9104, the Rock Creek National Park Act of 2026, introduced by Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-D.C.), redesignates Rock Creek Park in the District of Columbia as Rock Creek National Park.

H.R. 9999, the Mountain Pine Beetle Coordination Act, introduced by U.S. Rep. Brittany Pettersen (D-Colo.), authorizes the Secretary of Agriculture to enter into cooperative agreements to address mountain pine beetle infestations and reduce associated wildfire risk.

S.1051, the Historic Greenwood District—Black Wall Street National Monument Establishment Act, introduced by U.S. Sen. James Lankford (R-Okla.), establishes the Historic Greenwood District—Black Wall Street National Monument in Tulsa, Okla.

S. 1377, the Theodore Roosevelt National Park Wild Horses Protection Act, introduced by U.S. Sen. John Hoeven (R-N.D.), directs the Department of the Interior to maintain a genetically diverse herd of feral horses, with a population of no fewer than 150 horses, in the South Unit of Theodore Roosevelt National Park in N.D.
