Today, the Subcommittee on Water, Wildlife and Fisheries held an oversight hearing that furthers the policy objectives laid out by President Trump’s Executive Order (EO) 14276, Restoring America's Seafood Competitiveness by examining the challenges faced by the recreational and commercial fishing industries. Subcommittee Chair Harriet Hageman (R-Wyo.) issued the following statement in response: "Recreational and commercial fishing are vital to our nation's economy and way of life. President Trump's Executive Order to restore American seafood competitiveness is a pivotal step in revitalizing our fishing industry. By reducing burdensome regulations and enhancing access to our abundant marine resources, we can strengthen our economy, create jobs, and ensure sustainable fisheries for future generations." Background Enjoyed by millions, recreational fishing is both a major pastime activity and an important economic driver for coastal communities. Similarly, commercial fishing is an engine for job creation and economic growth that makes a significant contribution to the nation’s food supply chain. The system developed under the Magnuson-Stevens Fishery Conservation Act has made America the world’s gold standard in fisheries management. Operating under this system and by engaging with stakeholders, regulators, and other experts, Congress can identify new opportunities to support fishing in the United States, safeguard fishing’s role in the national economy, and continue to be responsible stewards of our resources. On April 17, 2025, President Trump signed Executive Order (EO) 14276, Restoring America's Seafood Competitiveness, to reduce regulatory burdens and ensure that the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration is focused on the core functions of fisheries management. The EO will also address unfair trade practices and promote the adoption of new technology to improve and support responsible fishery management. Today's hearing included discussions of new ways Congress can work with the Trump administration and stakeholders to promote the productive management and harvest of our fisheries and seafood resources. |
