Today, the Subcommittee on Federal Lands held a legislative hearing to examine six bills that promote multiple uses of our public lands and support rural Western communities. Subcommittee Chairman Tom Tiffany (R-Wis.) issued the following statement in response: “Today, the Subcommittee on Federal Lands considered legislation to ensure that our public lands and resources are managed in a way that works for the American people, not against them. We continued our work to cut through bureaucratic red tape and ensure your tax dollars are being used properly.” Background H.R. 34, the Land and Social Security Optimization (LASSO) Act, introduced by U.S. Rep. Paul Gosar (R-Ariz.), directs a portion of revenues generated from federal lands and waters to help strengthen the Social Security Trust Fund without raising fees or reducing revenue sharing with states, tribes or local governments. H.R. 1329, the Smithsonian American Women’s History Museum Act, introduced by U.S. Rep. Nicole Malliotakis (R-N.Y.), authorizes the selection of a prominent location on the National Mall for the American Women’s History Museum and ensures its exhibits accurately reflect the history and contributions of women in the United States as the nation approaches its 250th anniversary. H.R. 5478, the Fruit Heights Land Conveyance Act of 2025, introduced by U.S. Rep. Blake Moore (R-Utah), conveys approximately 295 acres of U.S. Forest Service land to Fruit Heights, Utah, to close an existing gap along the Bonneville Shoreline Trail in the Wasatch Mountain Range. H.R. 5911, the Crystal Reservoir Conveyance Act, introduced by U.S. Rep. Jeff Hurd (R-Colo.), conveys to Ouray, Colo., the Crystal Reservoir, Full Moon Dam and Ditch and 45 acres of surrounding land necessary to the Reservoir’s operation and maintenance. This will allow the city to maintain the reservoir, which is critical for wildfire suppression and response activities, outdoor recreation and providing water for the city’s growing population. S. 282, the Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument Access Act, introduced by Sen. Angus King (I-Maine), improves road access to the Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument in Maine. H.R. 3553, the BRUSH Fires Act, introduced by U.S Rep. Dave Min (D-Calif.), directs the U.S. Forest Service to study wildfire mitigation strategies in shrubland ecosystems, where fast-moving fires increasingly threaten communities in the wildland-urban interface.
