Today, the Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations held a hearing examining the role of public-private partnerships as America celebrates its 250^th birthday. The hearing focused on the role foundations and nonprofit partners play in conserving and honoring our nation’s public lands legacy.  Subcommittee Chairman Paul Gosar (R-Ariz.) issued the following statement in response:

“Today’s hearing made clear that foundations are delivering real, measurable results for America’s public lands by multiplying taxpayer dollars with private philanthropy and effective public-private partnerships. These organizations strengthen conservation, expand access, support local communities and ensure our parks, forests and wildlife areas are conserved for future generations. As we approach our nation’s 250th anniversary, this collaboration will be essential to honoring our shared heritage and safeguarding the landscapes that define the American story.”

Public-private partnerships are vital to the stewardship of U.S. public lands- from national parks and historical sites to national forests and wildlife refuges. These organizations leverage private philanthropy alongside federal resources to enhance conservation, education and recreation efforts, serving as the official fundraising partners to their corresponding federal agencies, as well as local units. 

Matching federal appropriations with private donations increases the impact of taxpayer dollars, effectively multiplying the efficiency of federal funds through enhanced investments in priority projects. Additionally, public-private partnerships provide opportunities for private donations and community volunteers to support the management of our public lands. 

As we celebrate 250 years since our nation’s founding, commemorative events developed through public-private partnerships and local nonprofit partners combine resources and expertise to engage the public while celebrating America’s Semiquincentennial.
