What They Are Saying: the Protecting Access for Hunters and Anglers Act

WASHINGTON, D.C., October 13, 2022 | Committee Press Office (202-225-2761)
  • WOW Subcommittee

Last month, 35 members introduced the Protecting Access for Hunters and Anglers Act of 2022 with the backing of numerous stakeholder groups and organizations.

"The Protecting Access for Hunters and Anglers Act will ensure that efforts to restrict the use of traditional ammunition and fishing tackle are rooted in a science-driven process and have the support of state fish and wildlife agencies, who in most cases have primary management authority over our nation’s fish and wildlife. CSF thanks Congressional Sportsmen’s Caucus (CSC) Member Rep. Rob Wittman and CSC Vice Chair Rep. Bruce Westerman for continuing to support America’s sportsmen and women." - Jeff Crane, president and CEO, Congressional Sportsmen's Foundation

"NSSF is deeply grateful to Congressmen Wittman and Westerman for demanding that wildlife conservation policy decisions are driven by proven scientific data instead of serving the interest of special interest anti-hunting groups. The U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service’s Final Rule prohibiting the use of traditional lead ammunition has no basis in an any scientific evidence. Rather, it is predicated on unproven theories it “may” have detrimental population impacts. The truth is that the Pittman-Robertson excise taxes paid by firearm and ammunition manufacturers are vital to the American Wildlife Conservation Model’s success, which is the envy of the world. This legislation will protect conservation for future generations of outdoorsmen and women." - Lawrence Keane, senior vice president and general counsel, National Shooting Sports Foundation

"The National Rifle Association applauds Ranking Member Bruce Westerman and Rep. Rob Wittman for introducing the Protecting Access for Hunters and Anglers Act of 2022. This vital legislation protects the use of lead ammunition and tackle that America’s outdoorsmen and women have used for centuries without significantly impacting local wildlife. On behalf of the millions of NRA members, supporters, and sportsmen across the nation, we thank Ranking Member Westerman and Rep. Wittman for their leadership on this important issue." - Jason Ouimet, executive director, National Rifle Association Institute for Legislative Action

"There is no scientific evidence that banning traditional ammunition on federal lands will increase wildlife populations. Instead, this type of ban will only limit hunters' ability to choose the most ethical, available, and affordable ammunition that best suits their specific hunting opportunity. Dallas Safari Club would like to thank and congratulate Ranking Member Westerman and Representative Wittman for recognizing this and acting to stop this ban." - Corey Mason, certified wildlife biologist and CEO, Dallas Safari Club

"Prohibiting the use of traditional ammunition limits access for hunters and negatively impacts national conservation efforts by cutting off a critical revenue stream to Pittman Robertson. Unfortunately, the Fish and Wildlife Service’s 2023 Hunt Fish Rule does just that without any population wide science calling for it. On behalf of SCI members across the country, thank you Congressmen Westerman and Wittman for standing for no-net-loss of hunting access and respect for state management authorities." - Ben Cassidy, executive vice president of international government and public affairs, Safari Club International

"The Sportsmen’s Alliance thanks Rep. Wittman and Rep. Westerman for protecting America’s largest contributors to conservation. The American sportsman has underwritten the vast majority of funding for the National Wildlife Refuge System since its inception, and has spearheaded conservation initiatives for more than a century. We look forward working with both representatives and Sen. Daines in the Senate to push this legislation through both chambers." - Todd Adkins, vice president of government affairs, Sportsmen’s Alliance
