Dear Colleagues

MTR on HR 1612

VOTE YES ON THE
MOTION TO RECOMMIT
H.R. 1612, THE PUBLIC LANDS SERVICE CORPS ACT OF 2009

Dear Colleague,

The Motion to Recommit would make four improvements to the Public Lands Service Corps program:

PROTECTS YOUNG PEOPLE FROM SEX OFFENDERS
-          Prohibits sex offenders from participation in this program for youth (as young as 16 years old), and also authorizes criminal background checks. This provision is modeled directly on protections in the Americorps law.

RESTORES FOCUS ON PREVENTING WILDFIRES
-          Restores the focus on wildfire prevention activities under the bipartisan Healthy Forests Act that is in the current Public Lands Corps law – which H.R. 1612 would erase entirely.

IMPROVE PUBLIC LANDS, NOT POLITICAL ADVOCACY
-          Requires that Service Corps work occur “on public lands” to ensure the focus is on improving lands rather than on political advocacy work.

NO TAXPAYER FUNDS TO GROUPS SUING GOV’T
-          Blocks any group that has a lawsuit against the Departments of Interior/Agriculture/Commerce from receiving grant money under this Act.
