Background:

The oversight hearing will focus on data collection issues in relation to the reauthorization of the Magnuson-Stevens Fishery Conservation and Management Act. The Act is the primary law governing fisheries resources and fishing activities in Federal waters which are defined as those waters extending from the edge of State waters to the 200-mile limit. The Act was first enacted in 1976. There have been two major reauthorizations of the Act - in 1996 and in 2006/2007. The most recent reauthorization passed Congress at the end of the 109th Congress and was signed by President Bush on January 12, 2007. Appropriations for the Magnuson-Stevens Act are authorized through FY 2013.
