Bishop Statement on House Passage of Federal Lands, Tribal Bills

WASHINGTON, D.C., May 15, 2018 -

Today, the House passed H.R. 4895 (Rep. Bennie Thompson, D-Miss.), H.R. 1417 (Rep. Don Yong, R-Ala.), and S. 1285 (Sen. Jeff Merkley, D-Ore.) by voice vote. Chairman Rob Bishop (R-Utah) issued the following statement:

“With the passage of these bills today, the House continues to demonstrate it is serious about improving federal land management and ensuring the federal government is a good neighbor to local communities. Now it’s the Senate’s turn to get to work and send these vital pieces of legislation to the president’s desk.”

H.R. 4895, the Medgar Evers Home National Monument Act, establishes the Medgar Evers National Monument in Jackson, Mississippi.

H.R. 1417, the National Law Enforcement Museum Exhibits Act, amends the National Law Enforcement Museum Act to allow the National Law Enforcement Museum to acquire, possess, collect, ship, transport, import, and displace firearms in the museum. The museum honors and commemorates the dedicated service and sacrifice of law enforcement offices in the United States.

S. 1285, the Oregon Tribal Economic Development Act, clarifies that seven federally recognized tribes in Oregon can buy, sell, lease or otherwise convey their non-trust (fee simple) owned land without approval from the federal government.
