Washington, D.C. – The Natural Resources Committee is holding one livestreamed event next week.
WEDNESDAY, MAY 18
Full Committee (Office of Insular Affairs)
The full Committee, led by Vice Chair Gregorio Sablan (D-CNMI), will hold an oversight hearing titled, Fiscal Year 2023 Budget Request of the Department of the Interior’s Office of Insular Affairs.
The Office of Insular Affairs (OIA) at the U.S. Department of the Interior (DOI) has broad general authority to provide for the special needs and address the concerns of the U.S. Territories of Guam, American Samoa, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands. OIA also oversees the three Freely Associated States: the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM), the Republic of the Marshall Islands (RMI), and the Republic of Palau.
The FY23 budget request for OIA includes a $10.5 million increase in discretionary funding as compared to FY22 enacted appropriations. The FY23 President’s Budget request also calls for parity in federal funding for Medicaid, the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance, and the Supplemental Security Income programs for all the U.S. Territories.
The hearing will be an opportunity for Territorial Governors to outline their needs and priorities for the coming fiscal year, as well as provide an update on the status of their efforts to address challenges in their communities.
