Grijalva Holds Press Conference to Speak out Against Republican Attacks on America’s National Monuments Ahead of Antiquities Act Hearing

Washington, D.C. – House Natural Resources Committee Ranking Member Raúl M. Grijalva (D-Ariz.) is holding a press conference tomorrow at 9:30 a.m. in Washington, D.C., to underscore the widespread opposition to President Trump’s executive order requiring a “review” of national monuments designated under the Antiquities Act. According to a recent poll, 80 percent of voters in the West support existing monument designations. Last week Grijalva spoke out against the executive order and questioned whether Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke has enough time to hold public meetings at each of the national monuments under review before the August deadline.

Following the press conference, Grijalva will attend a Committee hearing at 10 a.m. ET on the Antiquities Act to remind House Republicans that the president doesn’t have the power to overturn a monument and that national monuments are created with significant public participation. Last month the Committee and Democrats on the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform released a memo detailing a years-long record of extensive contact with federal, state and local leaders leading up to the Bears Ears National Monument designation – debunking any claims that the monument was established without consultation or local support.
