Bishop: GOP Blueprint for “Fewer and Smarter” Regulations Will Empower People, Unleash America’s Energy Potential

Today, House Committee on Natural Resources Chairman Rob Bishop (R-UT) along with Speaker Paul Ryan (R-WI) and other House Republican leaders unveiled the next phase of blueprints House Republicans are releasing this month as part of “A Better Way”—a bold pro-growth policy agenda to proactively tackle our nation’s greatest challenges.

The Regulatory Burdens Task Force report released today outlines a plan to grow our economy by making it easier to work, invest, produce and build things in America. It focuses on tackling excessive regulations, developing American energy and promoting financial independence.

“Outdated federal regulations—or policies that lack expert input or state engagement—cause more harm than good. They stifle innovation. They negatively impact peoples’ wallets and discourage the very behavior that made this nation the envy of the world. That’s why we are calling for a better way,” Chairman Bishop said. “We have a burdensome federal regulatory system that promotes uncertainty and holds up jobs and projects indefinitely. We need to put the days of believing bureaucrats in D.C. know best behind us and take actions to strengthen our lead to keep energy prices low for American families for generations to come.”

Bishop highlighted several of the report’s proposals under the jurisdiction of the Committee on Natural Resources:

  • Connect the boom to consumers and companies by cutting through the clutter of the permitting process and accelerating the development of our infrastructure to secure reliable and affordable energy for years to come.
  • Produce more of our own energy resources by rewriting the Five-Year Outer Continental Shelf (OCS) and Natural Gas Leasing Plan to foster responsible offshore energy production, and making it so leases can be added to existing plans, meaning a more agile approach in response to market dynamics and national needs.
  • Give states greater control of federal land by empowering states to petition for more economic activity on lands within their borders, and giving them the opportunity to manage those lands in accordance with our laws.
  • End needless project delays by allowing agencies to make broader use of data from states and independent sources for environmental impact studies.
