Background:

An oversight hearing on federal recognition was last held in the Subcommittee on June 27, 2012. In the last Congress, several bills were introduced to recognize new tribes, and one bill to establish new standards and procedures for administrative recognition by the Secretary. During this hearing, the Subcommittee will seek the perspective of the Department of the Interior regarding federal recognition of new Indian tribes.
