BACKGROUND:

The Committee has jurisdiction over federal recognition as well as the Department of the Interior’s Bureau of Indian Affairs, which has administrative procedures to federally recognize tribes. The Subcommittee will hear from stakeholders, tribes and the Department of the Interior about the current process for federal recognition and potential improvements.
