OVERSIGHT HEARING ON:

  • "Jobs at Risk: Waste and Mismanagement by the Obama Administration in Rewriting the Stream Buffer Zone Rule"

OPENING STATEMENT:

The Honorable Doug Lamborn
Chairman

WITNESSES AND TESTIMONY:

Panel I

The Honorable Joseph Pizarchik
Director
Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement

BACKGROUND:

While the coal mining industry is one of the few sectors of the economy to add jobs over the past few years, the Obama Administration’s proposed “Stream Buffer Zone” rule and other burdensome regulations threaten the jobs of thousands of hardworking coalminers and tens of thousands of jobs associated with the industry. This hearing will address the Obama Administration's rushed process to unnecessarily rewrite the “Stream Buffer Zone” rule that the Bush Administration spent two years to carefully write, taking into account the best available science. The hurried effort by the Obama Administration has resulted in a flawed rulemaking process that has placed politics ahead of science.
